The German University System
There are more than 300 universities in German with approximately 2 million students being enrolled at the present. About one third of all the universities are traditional, regular universities. Besides these there are about 150 universities of applied sciences, art and music universities respectively colleges. Students can choose among 330 subjects with more than 6800 courses of studies altogether. The regular period of studies usually covers 4 to 5 years and will be completed by passing the state examination (âStaatsexamenâ)or by obtaining a university degree such as the diploma or masters degree (âMagisterâ). More and more German universities today also offer courses of studies that are internationally compatible such as the bachelor and the masters degree for making it easier launching into an international career.
