German Summer Camp in Heidelberg

Summer 2027: learn German, explore Heidelberg and make friends from around the world.

At our language camp in Heidelberg, you spend the summer with teenagers aged 13 to 17 from many different countries. In the mornings you have German lessons in small groups. In the afternoons you head out with our team to the Old Town, the castle or the river Neckar.

Lessons, bedrooms and the dining hall are all in one building: the a&o Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof, a youth hotel opening in 2027. Every room has its own bathroom and air conditioning. Our camp management is in the building for the entire camp, and our supervision team can be reached around the clock.

The camp runs from 27 June to 31 July 2027. You can arrive any Sunday and book for as little as one week. You need some German to take part (level A1 or above).

One week costs €1,150. From two weeks, you pay just €950 per week. German course, accommodation, full board, supervision and the activity program are all included.

Quality certified by FDSV according to the European standard DIN EN 14804.

You learn together with teenagers from other countries. Each week you have 20 lessons (Standard Course) or 24 lessons (Intensive Course) of 45 minutes each. Classes focus on speaking, because that is what most students find hardest when they have only learned German at school.

Before you arrive, you take our online placement test, so your class is already set on day one. In Heidelberg we teach levels A1 to B2. Unfortunately, complete beginners cannot join yet. At the end of the course you receive a certificate stating your level.

The classrooms are inside the hotel, so after breakfast there is no commute across town.

Why a summer camp in Heidelberg?
Heidelberg

Why a summer camp in Heidelberg?

Heidelberg is home to Germany's oldest university, founded in 1386, and students still shape the city today: cafés, small shops and young people along the banks of the Neckar. With around 160,000 inhabitants, Heidelberg is much smaller than Berlin or Munich, and most places are just a few minutes away on foot or by tram. If you are traveling abroad without your parents for the first time, you will quickly find your way around.

Frankfurt, Mannheim and Speyer are all within easy reach, which makes Heidelberg a great base for day trips.

Accommodation and classes under one roof

You stay at the a&o Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof, a youth hotel opening in 2027. The classrooms, dining hall and common areas are in the same building.

You share your room with other international teens, and boys and girls are housed separately. Every room has a private bathroom, air conditioning and wardrobes for your things. All did students live together on one floor, where our supervision team can also be reached.

Activities and excursions – discover Heidelberg together

After class, the program continues. Together with other teens and our team, you explore Heidelberg and the surrounding area: Heidelberg Castle, the historic Old Town and a boat trip on the Neckar. Sports, games and evening activities are part of everyday camp life, and on Saturdays we go on full-day excursions, for example to Frankfurt or Speyer.

This is where you get to use your German in real life, make new friends and see Germany up close.

The activity program may change. All planned activities and excursions are included in the package price.

Heidelberg Castle

The castle ruins sit above the Old Town. Inside is the Heidelberg Tun, one of the largest wine barrels in the world, and from the terrace you can see across the whole city.

Old Town, Old Bridge

Walk along the Hauptstraße to the Old Bridge, then up the Philosophers' Walk on the other side of the Neckar, where you look straight across at the castle.

Boat trip on the Neckar

We take a boat up the Neckar, past small villages and old castles.

Day trip to Speyer

Speyer, one of Germany's oldest cities, is about half an hour away. It is home to the Imperial Cathedral, the largest surviving Romanesque church in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day trip to Frankfurt

Frankfurt is the city of skyscrapers, with the only real skyline in Germany. At the Römerberg, with its half-timbered houses, you see that Frankfurt is an old city too. Afterwards there is time for shopping on the Zeil or a walk along the river Main.

Getting here: one hour from Frankfurt Airport

For most students, Frankfurt Airport (FRA) is the easiest option. It is Germany's largest airport, with direct flights from almost every country, and Heidelberg is about 60 minutes away. On request, we pick you up at the airport and take you back at the end of your stay, also if you travel as an unaccompanied minor. If you come by train, get off at Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof (main station); the hotel is just a few minutes' walk away. Between 9 am and 6 pm we pick you up there free of charge and take you back on departure day. Arrival is on Sunday, departure on Saturday.

Frequently asked questions about the Heidelberg summer camp

Who is the Heidelberg summer camp for?

For teenagers aged 13 to 17 from around the world who want to learn German over the summer and already know some German. Many language camps only accept students from age 14. With us, you can join at 13.

What level of German do I need?

In Heidelberg we teach levels A1 to B2. You need some basic German; unfortunately, complete beginners cannot take part. The online placement test before your arrival shows which level you are at.

A1–A2: You can understand and say simple sentences.
B1–B2: You can communicate well in German in everyday situations.

How does the placement test work?

After registering, you take the test online from home. That way we can place you in the right class before the course starts, and you begin lessons straight away on your first day.

How are students supervised?

Our team accompanies you throughout the day: in class, at meals, during activities and on all excursions. All our students' rooms are on one floor, and a contact person is available in the building around the clock.

There are also times when you are not directly supervised, for example short breaks between activities or free time during an excursion. During these times you may explore the area in groups of at least three and must be back at the meeting point at the agreed time. Inside the hotel you can move around freely, except during quiet hours at night.

If you and your parents would like more independence, we recommend one of our courses with homestay accommodation. All rules are set out in our school rules (PDF). Please read them together with your parents. After registration, you will receive a link to sign them digitally.

How far is Heidelberg from Frankfurt Airport?

About an hour by car. On request, we pick you up at Frankfurt Airport (FRA), also if you travel as an unaccompanied minor; prices are listed under Additional Charges. At Heidelberg main station we pick you up free of charge on arrival and departure days between 9 am and 6 pm, so please book a train that arrives within this time.

Who will I share a room with?

With other international students aged 13 to 17. Boys and girls are housed separately. We try to place you with roommates of a similar age who speak a different native language, but we cannot guarantee this. If you would like to share a room with friends, mention it when you register and book the same room category.

What are the meals like?

You get full board: breakfast, lunch and dinner. On weekdays, lunch is a hot buffet with a salad bar; on weekends you get a packed lunch. The first meal is dinner on the day you arrive, the last is breakfast on the day you leave. We can cater for allergies and special diets if you let us know in good time.

What are the rooms like?

Every room has a private bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, wardrobes and single beds (bunk beds in the 4-bed rooms). Bed linen and towels are provided and changed once a week. There is free Wi-Fi throughout the building.

Can I book the summer camp for just one week?

Yes. You can arrive any Sunday between 27 June and 25 July and stay for one to five weeks. From two weeks it gets much cheaper: €950 per week instead of €1,150.

What is included in the price?

The package price includes the online placement test, a German course with 20 or 24 lessons per week, learning materials and a certificate, accommodation with full board, supervision, the activity program and excursions with all entry fees, a bus and tram pass, and pickup at Heidelberg main station (Sunday and Saturday, 9 am – 6 pm).
